Greasy gelled hair that is falling out and becoming thin

Has hair gel irreversibly damaged your hair follicles?

Very few people know this but hair gel is actually toxic. A simple way to understand this is like this: if you ate your hair gel, what do you think would happen? The toxic chemicals would make you very sick.

But did you know the chemicals you apply to your scalp absorb into your skin? Those toxic chemicals may do irreversible damage to your hair follicles.

Unfortunately, once hair follicles have become damaged to the point that they no-longer grow, they can never be revived: resulting in the hair getting thinner and thinner. However, there is a way to generate completely new hair follicles. It’s called hair follicle neogenesis and it works by breaking down the old damaged hair follicles using a Dermaroller and generating completely new hair follicles using growth factors.

How can you regrow the lost hair?

It is possible to generate new hair follicles in the scalp. This is called ‘hair follicle neogenesis’. To create new hair follicles you have to create tiny micro-wounds in the scalp tissue using a Dermaroller type device, then increase ‘growth factors’ in the scalp to encourage new hair follicles to generate.

The more you complete the process, the more hair follicles you can generate.

Is it OK to leave gel in your hair overnight?

I personally recommend against leaving gel in your hair overnight. Instead, rinse the gel out. If it’s incredibly difficult to rinse out, use some shampoo. After you’ve washed the gel out of your hair, apply a topical hair growth treatment to your scalp to stimulate increase hair growth. If you do this every night, not only will you prevent any hair loss caused by hair gel or wax, but you’ll also help stimulate hair growth, meaning you could grow healthier, thicker hair and avoid future hair loss.

Should you stop using hair gel?

Hair grows in phases. Each individual hair on your head grows for a period (several years), then it goes into a resting period for around two weeks, before it falls out. The hair that’s been shed will be replaced with a new hair. This is why it is important to keep the scalp clean and the pores clear and unblocked.

Ever noticed bald people often have shiny scalps?

You may have made the observation that many bald people and people with receding hairlines or thinning hair, often have shiny scalps. This shiny layer is caused by a build-up of an oil called ‘sebum’, which combines with dead skin cells, cosmetic styling products (such as hair gel) and other pollutants. This oil layer builds up and becomes embedded into the scalp, making it impossible to wash out using conventional shampooing methods. The hardened embedded oil fills in pores around the edges, eventually entirely filling the pores. This causes hair follicle miniaturization and eventually can contribute to total hair loss.

So, while hair gel does not cause hair loss, it may be a contributing factor, especially if you have used it for years without being careful to wash your hair and scalp daily, particularly before bed, in order to prevent the clogging of your skin’s pores.
