Here’s a great list for anyone who’s concerned about their hair. These shampoos are all organic and contain no sodium lauryl sulfate. There are loads more of these available so have a search on the web and see what you can find. My advice is this: ditch your current shampoo and choose an organic shampoo that’s free of sodium lauryl sulfate. Try to find one with lots of edible ingredients — it might sound strange but as a general rule, the greater the proportion of edible ingredients, the better the shampoo. And if you buy your shampoo from a supermarket, despite what the TV commercials say, it’s a terrible shampoo. The shampoos listed below are far superior to the big brand shampoos and will be much better for your hair.

  1. Really interested in buying these organic shampoos con you as well let us know as to where you may buy these products

    1. These shampoos are available on the internet. The prices don’t vary greatly. I would suggest doing a quick Google Shopping search.

  2. Please can you help me find the right shampoo for myself my hair’s falling and thinned I’m using nioxon (4) for 18 months…. want to use an organic shampoo without harsh chemicals can u help me to find some thank u

  3. My hair has thinned and has become half the volume in one year.My diet is alright.I used pantene, himalaya, sunsilk but none worked. The hair has also become dry and frizzy. Please suggest me a good shampoo that is also not very expensive.

    1. Hi nusrat,
You really need to feed your hair. Hair becomes dry and brittle when it is starved of nutrients. The two most likely causes of this are stress and DHT. DHT prevents the hair from receiving nutrients and stress reduces the supply of nutrients to the hair.
I advise that you begin a programme of intense hair nourishment such as the one described in my eBook.

    2. Nusrat, and anyone with similar problems: Get your THYROID checked. What you just described may be hypothyroidism, which is very damaging to your health – not just your hair.

  4. am a black girl,my hair is thin and falling can u suggest a shampoo.for me.i have started using klorane shampoo.

    1. Hi Deborah,
The Klorane shampoos are better than average but not quite good enough for the above list. However still far better than supermarket shampoos.

  5. Do you think Aubrey Organics Men’s Stock Ginseng Biotin Shampoo is healthy? The ingredient list sounds pretty good. I’ve been using it for around 6 months, want to make sure it is a good, healthy shampoo.
    Thank you

    1. Hi Thom,
Yes the Aubrey Organics shampoo looks good. I’ve had a look through the ingredients and it seems like a good shampoo.

  6. Hi,
I am 25 years old. I use to have very thick hair but now it’s all thinned out. I have male pattern baldness. Current stage is norwood 3a with thin hair at the crown. 2 months a go i had a hair transplant done in India and Ive lost all the hair that was implanted and looks like it’s all gone wrong. Now ive done all my research and know this is a part of the process but spending so much money……it does make you wonder!
Anyway for the first 3 weeks i was using special shampoo given by the doctor. He then told me to use baby shampoo thereafter. Since a few days ago I was using small amounts of baby shampoo each night to wash my hair. Now i read that it has SLS and stopped immediately. Have I damaged my new hair already?
I have an oily scalp and wanted to know what’s the best shampoo for me to use and how often should I wash my hair. I apply minoxidil twice a day (morning and evening). Should this be done on a clean shampooed scalp to increase effectiveness or what?
Your help would be much appreciated.

    1. Hi Amish,
Don’t worry about the shampoo — it will not have had an impact on your hair. It is advisable to use a good quality shampoo like the ones listed above but there are other things that have a far greater impact on your hair compared with shampoo — such as DHT and stress.
The problem with a lot of minoxidil products is they do not penetrate the the scalps surface easily, therefore are fairly ineffective. Some brands try to get around this by using things like ‘nanosomes’ to help deliver the minoxidil into the scalp. If you’re going to use minoxidil use it directly after washing and drying, but don’t expect impressive results.
Your transplanted hair should grow back soon enough. I’d recommend encouraging it in every way possible. One of the problems your new hair faces is DHT, which is present in sebum (the oil you describe). This can be treated and is explained in the first part of my eBook.
I’d recommend using either one of the above shampoos, or one of these: https://www.nicehair.org/hair-loss-treatments/what-is-the-best-shampoo-for-hair-loss.
      All the best,

  7. Hi
Congrats on a great, very informative and helpful website!
I have a terrible habit of pulling loose hair from my scalp and sometimes I notice at the root a long white kind of oily deposit. Is this sebum? My hair has been thinning gradually over the last five years or so. I had a period of success three years ago massaging organic virgin coconut oil into my hair every night and washing daily with Nioxin shampoo, following with conditioner. Sadly this came to and end when I became ill. Now my hair falls out whenever I touch it and I lose a lot with washing and styling.
I read somewhere that oil dissolves oil better than anything else and I wonder if this helped to unblock my hair follicles. I have had success with Nourkrin supplements but can no longer afford them. Their shampoo is said to have an exfoliating agent to cleanse the scalp thoroughly, removing DHT and sebum deposits. The reviews say it is very drying for long hair and also it contains many of the nasties I and others are looking to avoid.
Please offer some advice as to where I should turn now. I should mention I am a 37 year old female.
    Thank you

    1. Head & Shoulders contains zinc, which can help prevent dandruff. However it also contains SLS and other undesirable chemicals. It’s not the best shampoo that you can use to nourish your hair and scalp.

  8. hi, i am 29yrs old mother of two kid.i am having severe hair fall and when ever i touch my hair it falls out. plz suggest some good shampoo and treatment.

    1. Hi Anindita,
Hair loss is common post pregnancy. It can continue for some time after giving birth but usually regrows naturally in time. However some women’s hair can become a lot finer.
If you want to regrow the lost hair it’s important that you start an intense hair nutrition program — in other words you need to intensely feed your hair using foods for hair growth and by feeding your hair directly via the scalp.
I’d recommend you check out my 2 minute a day hair regrowth technique.
      All the best,

  9. I have been using H&S for all my life. Im 30. And im so totally upset that im going bald :’O( I know it’s stress, relatively rubbish diet (which i am improving) and strong shampoo.
I can attempt to take care of all my other issues, but the Shampoo issue is much too vast.
Should i be looking for an organic, chemical-free shampoo? If so please can you recomend the best ONE to me. Willing to spend around £10/bottle.
At present ive been looking on the net for natural ingredient shampoos.. there are soo many goddam shampoos!!!! im so stressed!! Im recently single! I need my hair!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Hi Vijay,
Don’t stress too much about shampoo — it is highly unlikely to cause your hair loss. Stress and ‘DHT‘ are far more likely causes.
It’s a good idea to use a good shampoo — all of the shampoos on this page are very good quality — you could choose any of these and most are under £10.
My biggest recommendation for you is to start a stress relief program. Take a look at my subliminal mind training program, which trains your mind to react calmly to stress and worry.
I’d also recommend taking a look at my 2 minute per day intense hair nutrition program — this will help quickly and intensely feed your hair helping to regrow it.
      The key things are:

If you make sure you’re doing these things you’ll soon be on the right track.
      All the best,

  10. in fact no, willing to spend up to £15 – £20 / bottle
I can’t believe i’ve been using Head&Shoulders not knowing about harsh chemicals :O(

  11. what do you think about the repairing awapuhi ginger shampoo and conditioner from organix

    1. Hi Tamara,
The ingredients in this shampoo are interesting. However it is not organic or SLS free so won’t make it onto this list.
      All the best,

  12. What about JASON Natural Biotin shampoo? Does it contain SLS? I was hoping to see it on your list above…

    1. Hi Tom,
This shampoo is SLS free and looks to be a fairly good shampoo. It does contain several natural organic ingredients — I’d say it’s borderline as being acceptable for this list. I may add it on. Thanks for the tip.

    1. Hi Alex,
Thanks for the comment. Either Revita or Avalon are great choices.
I’ve sent you an email with some more hair growth tips 🙂

  14. Hi, i would like to ask you about 2 shampoos that i have in my mind to buy them. The 1st is : DS Laboratories Revita Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo and the 2nd is Avalon Organic Biotin B-Complex Therapy Thickening Shampoo
Which of these 2 shampoo you think would work better for hair loss ? Thank you

    1. Hi Nondas,
I’d probably say Revita works better for hair loss. The Revita shampoo is also featured on nicehair.org. Check out:

What is the best shampoo for hair loss

However Avalon Organic Biotin B Complex is a really good shampoo. It’s a close call between the two.
      Thanks for the comment,

  15. hi can u say if american crew hair products use sls or what about redken and also roffler….

    1. Hi Muhammad,
American Crew products tend to contain really good ingredients. However their shampoos do use SLS. They most likely use a ‘better quality’ SLS that other shampoos though.
The redkens contain SLS and parabens.
Roffler shampoos are pretty awful — no beneficial ingredients.
      All the best,

    1. Hi Ed,
Vosene contains zinc, which can be beneficial for the scalp and hair. However it is not a high enough standard of shampoo for this list, as this list contains only organic, nutritious shampoos that contain no sodium laurl sulphate.
      Many thanks,

  16. Hi Chris,
Can you reccommend a great organic shampoo for hair regrowth available in the US?

    1. Hi Lisa,
Most of these organic shampoos are available in higher end cosmetics shops and natural health shops, although some of them are starting to appear in supermarkets.
If you see any in US shops please let us know and I’ll give you my review 🙂
      All the best,

  17. Unfortantely, none of these shampoos are sold in my country, however, I found a store which sell organic stuff and found a shampoo which as advised by the sales lady is organic and free from SLS. The shampoo is from an australian company called A’Kin and I am using the uncented one for sensitive scalps. I goolged the product ingredients and it looks OK except for something called Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate which I am not sure if it is harmful or not.
Need your advice and thank you once again for the great tips.

    1. Hi Suad,
Thanks for the comment. I checked out A’Kin and it’s comprised almost entirely of synthetic ingredients, so won’t make it onto this list. However it shouldn’t cause you any harm.
      Many thanks,

  18. Avalon Organic Biotin B-Complex Therapy Thickening Shampoo have changed their formula. I wonder if it is still recommended?

  19. I’m 24 years old and my hair has already begun to thin. As far as I know, I’m not genetically predisposed to female pattern hair loss. However, I’ve noticed that my hairline on either side above my temples is receding, and now the center is beginning to look like it is as well. I’ve had a part in the same place for several years, and it has become easier to see the scalp beneath my hair along the line. The top of my scalp generally feels like it has less volume when I run my fingers through it, and looking at pictures from a few years ago, it’s clear that there’s a difference.
I intend to see a dermatologist to determine the root cause of this (if it isn’t simply stress and diet), but in the meantime, I need to know what shampoo would best suit my needs. I’m extremely cautious to use a new product because I don’t want to incur further damage, so if you have a specific recommendation, I would really appreciate it. At this point, there isn’t a price cap because I consider it an investment to make sure my hair is healthy. What do you think?

    1. Hi Mary,
Any of the shampoos on this page would be fine. I’ll also email over a few more suggestions for promoting hair growth 🙂

    1. Hi Karen,
I’ve checked out the ingredients and yes this is a really good shampoo. I’ll add it to the list.
Thanks for the add. Don’t forget to follow nicehair.org on Twitter for updates.
      All the best,

  21. and does the hair falls coz of dandruf,cz m facing dandruf problem now.so shal i use a dandruff shampoo or hair loss shampoo.please suggest me in between

    1. Hi Jasmine,
I recommend reading this post as a first step:
The ingredient Ketoconazole is known to kill the fungus that causes dandruff. Additionally a recent study has shown that shampoos that contain ketoconazole may also reduce hair loss and promote hair growth.
Your first step should be to clear up the dandruff. You may also find in doing this you reduce your hair loss. If not, come back and I’ll provide some additional help.
      All the best,

  22. Hi Chris,
I read the list for best shampoo for hair loss. If the DS Laboratories is too expensive, which one from the Organic shampoos would be the best bet for hair loss? Avalon Organic Biotin B-Complex Therapy Thickening Shampoo seems to be a good choice because it has Biotin but I wanted to get your opinion.

  23. Hi Chris,
I’ve read the best shampoos for hair loss but I was wondering which of these organic shampoo are best to encourage hair growth.
    Thank you,

  24. Chris, first of all i want to say thank you for you response to my question on 8th May, i never returned to the site after asking the question and as i am still looking i have only just seen that you had responded. So thank you!!
I am going to check out the links you had mentioned, but whilst imn here i thought id ask…. i bought the Avlon Organics lemon shampoo. It leave my scalp a little shiney which is not great if your thinning/balding.
As shampoos have so many ingredients,i have been looking at trying out baby shampoos as surely these will be the mildest?
i have looked at Buriti Baby Shampoo (from The Body Shop)or Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Shampoo.
i really dont want a shampoo that leaves my scalp shiney, drawing attention to my hair loss/thinning.
Are baby shampoos okay for adults? or is this a bad idea?

    1. Hi Vijay,
If you want to treat the underlying cause of the shininess I would suggest reading my eBook. The shininess is caused by a build-up of sebum (an oil that secretes through the skins pores). This oil is very sticky and can combine with cosmetics, dead skin cells and materials in the air including pollution. Since many common cosmetic ingredients contain toxic chemicals and pollution is largely made of toxic chemicals, having a layer of sebum on your scalp is a recipe for hair loss. Sebum also contains DHT, which is the biggest cause of hair loss.
In the eBook I explain how to remove ‘sebum based plaque’ from your scalp. I also explain how to reduce sebum production by increasing co-enzyme A in your liver and improving your liver health, as well as balancing hormones. By reducing inputs into the liver and improving liver efficiency, less fat is sent to the skin to be released from the body via the pores.

  25. I live in South Africa – Gauteng – Sandton – where will i find these products – My hair is so so dry, brittle and it feels like grass. Thank you and Kind Regards

    1. Hi Urans,
If your hair is very dry and brittle it is a sure sign that the hair is extremely malnourished — that it is not receiving a strong supply of nutrients. The more nutrients your hair is supplied with, the more lustrous, shiny and strong it will become. A strong supply of nutrients to the hair is one of the keys to healthy hair.
I’ve emailed further details over to you.

  26. Hi,
I’ve just ordered Avalon… Although the further I researched, it seems that they have recently changed their formula and customers do not seem happy about the change. Is the new formula still recommended? I had narrowed my choices down to Avalon Hair Thickening Shampoo vs Pura d’hor Hair Loss Prevention shampoo. I went with Avalon due to the lower cost. Any thoughts on the Pura d’hor line?

    1. Hi NG,
I only recently found the Pura d’hor shampoo and looking at its ingredients it’s a really good shampoo. Do you have any details/links showing how the Avalon shampoo has changed?

  27. Hello Chris,
Perhaps you have seen this shampoo before but just in case, could you please provide feedback from the ingredients below?
And thanks for all the information you have provided on this great website.

That looks like a really good shampoo.
Linoleic acid = topical 5AR Inhibitor
Green tea contains free radical scavengers
      Horestail contains silica
Unfortunately you pasted the link from your green drinks comment. Have you got a link for this shampoo? I would gladly feature it on the page as it has some excellent ingredients.
      Thanks again,

  28. Hello,
My hair is super curly and really really frizzy, and if you iron it out it is really long, therefore I have lots of hair. I am half hispanic half Austrian. I almost always use half a bottle of conditioner on my hair (300 ml to 500 ml) depending how tangled it is. It is always tangled, and if i brush it without conditioner it looks very frizzy (like a lion). The ends are split too because of all the tangles.
Over the last three years I have been using bad conditioners and the results are not good. I wash my hair once a week because I don’t want it to look like straw. And after all these year of washing it once a week and using bad hair products my scalp is bad and I have itching.
After I wash my hair, I must use a leave in cream for detangling otherwise it becomes too frizzy and the tangles get worse. I might have so many tangles because I wash/brush my hair once a week. How often should I brush it? The problem is if I brush my hair the curls become frizzy, unless I brush it in the shower or if it is soaking wet and I must add conditioner or leave in cream in order for it not to be frizzy. How often should I wash it? What products do your recommend?

  29. Can i know how and where I can buy these in malaysia and Singapore either from retail shop or online. Thank you.

  30. I have dry brittle hair and also experience hairloss which has been over a year or so I also have dandruff and itchy scalp.
Could you please suggest the best shampoo and what I can do to minimize hairloss please
