There are hundreds of hair loss supplements. Choosing one is a gamble: it’s hard to know if it will be the answer you’ve been looking for or have no effect on your hair.
Wow, what can I say? This is the best hair loss supplement I’ve ever seen. I’ve been studying the hair growth effects of thousands of different nutrients and this supplement contains almost all the key nutrients that promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. It has the key amino acids, DHT blockers, inflammation reducers, key vitamins and minerals and several other beneficial nutrients. This supplement tops the list but is very expensive. So it’s worth checking out the others on this page (which are also very good) if you don’t want to spend this much.
Contain resveratrol, a powerful natural antioxidant which has been shown to slow down aging due to antioxidant action on cells
Contains Bioperine, a patented form of black pepper, which has been shown in studies to improve nutrient absorption
Contains capsaicin (the ingredient which gives chilli peppers their heat), which has been shown to reduce male pattern baldness by increasing dermal IGF-1 — the growth factor required that seems to play an important role in hair growth
Contains biotin, which is used by the body to transform amino acids into proteins like keratin, among other functions. It’s therefore vital for healthy hair and skin
Contains fish collagen. This is interesting because it’s similar to shark cartilage used in Nourkrin hair supplements. It’s what Nourkrin say makes their supplements work. However I’ve seen no research to suggest this does work. Still it’s worth a mention because there must be some reason fish/shark meat is used in hair supplements. It may be beneficial due to the amino acid content?
Toji contains a huge array of beneficial ingredients covering healthy hair growth support, DHT inhibition, blood circulation improvement, antioxidants, amino acids and several less common supporting ingredients.
Contains a good array of B vitamins and antioxidant vitamins for supporting healthy hair and skin
Contains iodine from kelp to help support healthy thyroid function
Contains saw palmetto to naturally reduce 5 alpha reductase and therefore prevent the conversion of testosterone into the hair killing DHT
Contains Cysteine — the largest constituent amino acid in hair keratin
Contain ginkgo biloba, which may help carry nutrients to the hair by improving blood flow to the skin
Contains grape seed extract, which may be a good source of antioxidants (depending on which part of the grape is used)
Inositol helps reduce symptoms of PCOS and anxiety
Contains stinging nettle, which may help reduce DHT
Reservage Organic Keratin Booster and DHT Blocker Supplement
Around $30 for 90 tablets
The Reservage product has quite a different angle on its hair loss supplement — but a good one. It contains high quality, organic ingredients including high levels of biotin and red grape, which are rich in resveratrol. It also contains “soluble keratin”, which the producer claims increases keratin in the hair, helping to grow more hair. If two capsules are taken per day this supplement contains just about the perfect amount of saw palmetto, according to my research on natural 5-alpha-reductase inhibition. An interesting product.
High volume of biotin — a key ingredient for supporting healthy hair growth
Contains the innovative “Solubalized keratin”, which may help boost hair growth
Contains resveratrol, which is high in antioxidants
Contains saw palmetto, which at two capsules per day is about the right amount to block DHT (320mg)
Organic produce contains higher levels of nutrients
Ingredients
Biotin (3,000 mcg)
Cynatine® HNS (Solubilized Keratin) (500 mg)
Pro-Longevity Factor Resveratrol™ (40 mg)
Organic French red whole grape (skin, vine, stem, seeds) (Vitis vinifera) full spectrum polyphenol profile
The HairAnew supplement is almost entirely focused on nourishing the hair with vitamins and minerals. It has no DHT inhibiting ingredients but it does contain kelp for healthy thyroid function in addition to the hair nutrition vitamins and minerals.
As with the NuHair product, vitamin C is a prominent feature of HairANew, which is highly beneficial for your circulatory health — which in turn is key for healthy supply of nutrients to your hair and will also help with skin health and other health areas.
A reasonably high dose of niacin is used in this supplement, which is excellent for aiding the delivery of nutrients to the hair — niacin cause the body to flush blood to the skin.
The HairANew supplement contains a large portion of biotin, which is probably the most important supportive nutrient for hair growth
Kelp is a good natural source of iodine, which supports thyroid gland health. An overactive thyroid gland is known to cause hair loss in some people.
Inositol supports liver health, which is important for healthy hair
Contains silica, which helps build keratin for hair growth
The HairOmega supplement has a well rounded approach to hair loss prevention — it inhibits DHT, supports healthy hair growth and supplies a number of key supporting nutrients.
Contains saw palmetto, pumpkin and green tea, which naturally inhibit DHT to help prevent male pattern baldness
Contains cysteine, which is the predominent amino acid in hair keratin
Contains biotin and other B vitamins, which support healthy hair and skin
Contains iodine, which helps regulate healthy thyroid function — an over-active thyroid is known to cause hair loss
Contains ginkgo biloba, which supports healthy blood circulation in the extremities — key for delivering nutrients to the hair
Inositol supports healthy liver function
Green tea and grape seed extract are good sources of antioxidants
Advecia is a good hair loss supplement for men because it contains natural DHT blockers. In fact the supplement is almost entirely DHT blockers and antioxidants.
Contains saw palmetto extract, which helps reduce blood DHT levels
Contains green tea extract, which may also reduce blood DHT levels and provides antioxidants
Contains arginine, which helps your body produce citruline, which helps improve blood circulation
Contains beta sitosterol, which helps reduce blood DHT levels
Contains lysine, which studies show increases hair growth speed
Contains grape seed extract, which is a good source of antioxidants, providing the grapes are not heated to high temperatures during processing
TRX2 is perhaps the most innovative hair loss supplement available and it uses a powerful cocktail of natural substances to produce what might be considered a more profound impact on hair than other hair loss supplements. However, it contains much less of the supporting nutrients that other supplements contain — for example it doesn’t reduce DHT levels.
TRX2 is the only hair loss supplement known to use the innovative method of combining L-Carnitine, niacin and potassium to improve the function of the potassium ion channels in the hair.
The niacin helps effectively deliver the ingredients to the hair
Zinc, magnesium, biotin and selenium are all key supporting nutrients required for healthy hair growth
This supplement contains the key amino acids that build hair keratin and promote hair growth. It also contains biotin, which supports hair growth by helping the body convert amino acids into hair keratin.
Vitamin C is key to circulatory health — which in turn is key to nutrient supply to the hair via blood vessels
Methionine, cysteine and lysine are three of the main amino acids found in hair keratin and are strongly considered to promote hair growth
Contains horsetail, which is a good source of silica, which is a key mineral for collagen growth, which is a key component of skin, the organ from which hair grows
Ingredients to look for in a good hair loss supplement
There is strong evidence showing that some ingredients reduce hair loss and even increase hair growth. Below are ingredients that have been studied and shown to cause observable improvements in hair loss. Therefore by using supplements containing the below ingredients you can be more certain the product will work.
Saw palmetto
Several studies have shown that saw palmetto has a similar effect to the drug Finasteride. Finasteride reduces DHT and was originally developed for treatment of prostate cancer, but is effective at treating hair loss caused by DHT. Saw palmetto is a natural, milder treatment for hair loss, with milder effects.
The researchers used 100 male patients that were diagnosed with mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia. The patients were split into two groups, one received saw palmetto (320 mg) and the other received finasteride (1mg).
The researchers concluded that the saw palmetto group experienced a distinct increase in hair growth.
Although saw palmetto’s effects are not as significant as Finasteride, it’s side effects are also much less — most people experience no side effects at all.
Saw palmetto extracts have the ability to inhibit both types of 5-α reductase. When patients with androgenetic alopecia took it orally, it enhanced hair growth (2). In another study by Wessagowit and colleagues, 50 male patients with androgenetic alopecia were treated with topical saw palmetto products for 24 weeks. The result showed that the topical products were more effective on patients who didn’t want to take it orally, or can’t tolerate the side effects of oral medications (3).
Zinc
In another research study, Abdel and colleagues compared the levels of serum zinc in patients with alopecia areata with the serum zinc levels in healthy participants. The research team found that serum zinc levels were lower in patients with alopecia areata. They concluded that zinc supplementation might work to reduce hair loss (4).
Green tea
Green tea has also shown a great deal of promise as a natural hair loss treatment. It seems to have DHT blocking properties and contains antioxidants, which which may play a role in protecting cells from free radical damage.
The jury is still out as to whether green tea can help reduce DHT levels though, with one study suggesting in may increase testosterone, which may lead to increased DHT. My research suggests it’s beneficial and will have no detrimental effect on hair growth. See what I think about green tea and DHT here.
Biotin contains sulphur, which is required for hair growth. There are a lot of advocates of biotin on the internet — a lot of people recommend it’s supplementation for increasing hair growth. And research suggests the claims are substantiated.
Biotin plays several roles relating to skin and hair health. It’s required in the production of amino acids. Since hair is made almost entirely of amino acids (particularly cysteine, below), you can see why it’s often cited as an important vitamin for hair growth.
Cysteine
Cysteine is thought to be a very valuable nutrient for increasing hair growth. It’s an amino acid. Amino acids are the basic building blocks of protein. Your body uses these building blocks to build different tyoes of protein. One such protein is hair keratin and cysteine is the main component of it.
A study in an Oxford lab showed L-Carnitine, in combination with a small amount of potassium, may help “reactivate potassium ion channels” in the hair follicle, which may improve hair health.
Finally, in a comparative study, to evaluate the effects of omega 3 & 6 supplementation on hair loss. One hundred and twenty healthy women were divided into two groups. The first group received omega 3&6. The second group was the control group. The first group reported a nearly 90% reduction of hair loss (7).
How to use these supplements: the best hair regrowth strategy
You’ve got some really great hair loss supplements on this page. Most of them have similar ingredients but some of them are a bit different. In order to maximize hair regrowth you need to cover all the bases: reduce DHT, increase blood flow to the hair, increase keratin production and improve potassium ion channel function.
Most of these supplements have a suggested dose of 3 capsules/tablets per day. However, I suggest a better strategy is to buy two or three different supplements and mix them up throughout the day to gain more benefit.
Here’s my suggested approach:
Before breakfast
Before breakfast take one or two TRX2 supplements to activate potassium ion channels in the hair follicles and give your body a dose of biotin and other vitamins to help with biological processes that are required for healthy hair growth.
Lunch time
Take one Reservage Organic Keratin Booster and DHT Blocker with lunch to supply your body with keratin needed to produce hair, more biotin, plenty of antioxidants and DHT blockers. If you’re a woman (and therefore have less DHT in your blood) use the standard Reservage Organic Keratin Booster (without DHT blockers).
Evening
If you’re a man any of the supplements on this page that block DHT would be a good choice to have with your evening meal. If you’re a woman you could either have another TRX2 or Resverage or you could go with a supplement like HairAnew, which contains kelp and silica. Kelp is a good source of iodine, which can be beneficial for woman to help regulate thyroxine.
Why mixing it up may be optimal strategy
In my view the above strategy is better than simply taking one supplement three times per day because you provide your hair with a wider range of nutrients to support hair growth. Providing you take each supplement on its own with a meal at separate times of the day you can avoid mixing nutrients that may either prevent absorption of other nutrients or provide your body with more than it needs of any given nutrient.
Follow this guide to make your hair grow faster and thicker. These instructions also show you how to generate new hair follicles (hair follicle neogenesis).
Dilate blood vessels in scalp and increase blood flow to the hair
Your hair receives the building blocks it needs to generate new hair keratin via the bloodstream. We're going to dilate the blood vessels in your scalp, causing a rich supply of blood to flow to your hair, intensely nourishing it, all day, every day.
Next I'll show you how to enrich your blood with a special combination of super healthy nutrients that will go to work healing your scalp and intenslely nourishing your hair.
