Why men should consider using leave-in conditioner instead of gel or wax
I’ve been using gels and waxes on and off for years but there are some major downsides to them. They make your hair sticky and I don’t like the idea of leaving gel on your hair overnight because it can block the scalp pores (see can hair gel cause hair loss). Because of this I decided to find the best organic hair gels and waxes so I wouldn’t have to worry about the awful chemicals in most gels leaching into my scalp and causing problems. However, I now have slightly longer hair and hard wax or gel just doesn’t style my hair how I want it too — lighter and more loosely.
I guess I’ve been racking my brains sub consciously for a while trying to think of a solution to these problems. Then it occurred to me — why not use a really good quality, totally natural organic leave-in conditioner to style my hair (just to give it a tiny bit of hold and control but not to make it rock hard like wax and gel do!).
So I decided to search for the best nutrient-rich organic leave in conditioners that I could happily leave in my hair all day and even overnight without having to wash my hair before going to bed. As a result I created this list. I’m trying the Giovanni Direct product first, but I’ll make my way through most of these products in time and add comments as I go — so bookmark this page if you know you’ll be using organic leave-in conditioner in the future.
Why you should use an organic leave-in conditioner
In my experience of researching the world’s best hair products I have found one good consistent measure of quality — use of organically grown ingredients. If a hair product manufacturer has gone to the trouble of using organically grown natural ingredients, it’s likely that the product is far better quality than most supermarket type products and that the ingredients are more nutritious. It’s a good sign of quality and shows that a product is a cut above the rest. So when you’re searching for the world’s best hair products, look for organic ones, then take a look at the ingredients. If the ingredients list is full of crap that you wouldn’t want on your skin don’t buy it.
Some health professionals and top dermatologists say, “if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.” That’s good advice because the products you put on your skin absorb into your blood stream. For a product like leave in conditioner, which might be on your hair all day and all night, it’s important that the ingredients will not impact on your health if they are absorbed into your blood stream — and in the case of the products listed on this page, they will not only not hurt you, they’ll actually benefit you!
Why Organic Ingredients are Better for You
Not only are organic ingredients richer in nutrients and pesticide free, they’re also better for the world! Watch this video to learn more.
Hello, I’ve been using Shea Moisture products for awhile and have had great results. Particularly the Shea Moisture Organic Hair Thickening Growth Milk which is a leave in conditioner as well. It says it’s all natural and I am curious what your opinion may be on this product and others by that brand. thank you
Hi Gabriel,
That looks like a great product. I found it during my research but must have missed it out during the write up. I’ll add that one to the list.
Thanks,
Chris
Hey,
I have 2 products from REF (reference of sweden)
REF.424 & REF.141
What’s your opinion about the two? Are they harsh for the hair?
Thanks Nick, these look interesting. I can’t find the ingredients for these products but I’ll try to purchase and test them in the future. If you have a link to the product please post up.
All the best,
Chris
Hi Chris,

I have very long black hair. I have hair löss and my hair is now very thin.

Hi Marwa,
If your hair is very thin you’d be best off going for the Shea Moisture Thickening Growth Milk in my view. If you don’t find that works for you, try the Aubrey Organics Leave-In Conditioner. I’ve been testing this one recently and it’s pretty good for thin hair.
All the best,
Chris
