Nanogen Hair Growth Factor Serum Super Review + Ingredients Explained

At first examination of the ingredients of the Nanogen serum I thought it looked terrible. However I’ve since learnt that Bitter Orange contains a high concentration of limonene, which I believe increases PGE2 in the scalp: studies have shown increasing scalp PGE2 increases hair growth.

Ingredients Explained

Pea sprout extract

I’ve seen pea sprout extract in a lot of hair loss treatments but hadn’t known how it increases hair growth until recently. According to one study topically applied pea sprout increases the growth factor FGF7, which seems to increase the growth phase of the hair follicles.

This is probably why Nanogen called the product Growth Factor Serum.

Bitter Orange Flower Water

I don’t know how much limonene this product contains but I’d guess the reason they’ve included bitter orange is to try to increase scalp PGE2, which has been shown in studies to increase hair growth.

In one study, researchers used PGE2 protagonists to increase scalp PGE2 and found that Bitter orange and limonene “were able to maintain high PGE2 levels similar to control groups” (PubMed).

Niacinamide

Niacin is a B vitamin that appears in many topical hair loss treatments because at least one study has shown it increases hair growth when applied to the scalp. This may be because niacin helps improve blood circulation when it’s present in the blood vessels.

Green tea extract

Green tea contains a polyphenol called EGCG. EGCG binds with androgen receptors in the scalp. This is supposed to reduce the number of available receptors for DHT to bind to, therefore reducing the damage done by DHT to the hair follicles. EGCG is also an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant.

Red Clover Extract

Red clover extract has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Since inflammation of the hair follicles is strongly associated with hair loss, topical anti-inflammatory ingredients should help reduce hair loss.

Larix Europaea Wood Extract

Larix Europea Wood is used in the popular hair loss treatment Redensyl, which is claimed to be more effective than Minoxidil. However I have seen no research that shows it has any effect on hair growth.
