DHT causes fibrosis in your scalp. Fibrosis is basically scarring. When scarring occurs your scalp becomes shiny. And when that happens it means the hair follicles have been destroyed.

In fact, once fibrosis has set in, hair cannot grow. It’s impossible.

Reducing DHT will help prevent further fibrosis from occurring, but it WILL NOT MAKE HAIR GROW BACK.

The cortisol graph you see here illustrates typical cortisol levels. However, as someone who experiences hair loss, you likely have higher than normal cortisol, or higher than normal testosterone. Or a combination of the both. For me it was both. Which is why I lost my hair so young and so rapidly. Luckily I was able to get my hair back though (that’s me in the picture).

If you have high cortisol, it’s likely that your cortisol is elevated at night. Which is very bad. It likely means your cortisol chart is consistently elevated, which has bad ramifications for your whole life. If your cortisol is consistently elevated you probably feel tired a lot during the day; you’re probably not achieving the things you want to achieve in life due to low drive — and it means DHT is building up in your scalp day by day, gradually destroying your hair by causing more and more fibrosis.

What Does DHT Do?

Dihydrotesterone (DHT) is a sex steroid and androgen found in the testes, prostate, adrenal glands and hair follicles. It’s produced by the reaction of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme with another androgen, testosterone. It’s estimated that about 5% to 7% of the body’s testosterone is converted tpo DHT, with most produced in the prostate gland.

DHT has been shown to be twice as likely to bind with androgen receptors, and five times more adhesive. This matters because DHT has also been shown to be a significant contributor to androgenic alopecia. AGA is the most common form of hair loss and affects both men and women. It’s estimated that by the time they reach 50, over half of American men will suffer from DHT-triggered hair loss.

More androgen receptors in the Scalp = More Hair Loss?

Balding cells contained significantly (P < 0.01) greater levels of androgen receptors (Bmax = 0.06 +/- 0.01 fmol/10(4) cells (mean +/- S.E.M.)) than those from non-balding scalp (0.04 +/- 0.001)

Many of these androgen receptors exist in hair follicles on the scalp. How readily DHT binds to them is partly influenced by genetic factors. Some people have hair follicles which are more susceptible to DHT, and so are more likely to suffer from AGA. This 1998 study showed that the scalps of balding men contain higher levels of androgen receptors than those of non-balding men.

How does DHT cause hair loss?

DHT causes hair loss by disrupting the healthy hair growth cycle. Hair grows during the anagen phase, when the follicles are active. After a brief catagen phase, which allows for follicle renewal, the follicles go through a resting (telogen) phase.

DHT attaches to receptor cells at the root of the hair follicles (the dermal papillae). From here it prevents the amino acids and minerals needed to nourish the hair from getting through. As a result the hair follicles shrink — a process called miniaturization. This leads to a shorter anagen phase and a longer telogen phase. New hair grown from miniaturized follicles is much thinner and shorter. Eventually it stops growing and falls out because the more prevalent telogen hair is less firmly rooted to the scalp.

What Causes DHT To Increase?

The level of DHT in the body is dependent on the levels of free circulating testosterone. As men age their testosterone levels decline, and you might expect DHT levels to decline too. This doesn’t happen though. The reason DHT levels remain the same in older age is explained by the fact that testosterone is converted to a wide variety of byproducts, not only DHT. As the body ages it shifts focus of testosterone conversion away from these other byproducts to maintain normal DHT levels.

Many studies have shown that obese men have much lower levels of testosterone than those with a normal BMI. Reducing your weight can increase levels of testosterone and in turn, DHT. Weight loss also reduces the conversion of testosterone to estrogen, which means there’s more available to be converted to DHT.

Regular exercise will also increase DHT levels. Resistance exercise like weightlifting is good for stimulating testosterone production. While explosive spurts of exercise, such as sprinting, will cause your DHT levels to rocket.

The foods you eat will also affect your DHT. Testosterone production can be stimulated by increasing your carbohydrate intake while restricting protein.

How To Reduce DHT



DHT levels can be reduced by medical means. Propecia (Finasteride) is one of only two FDA-approved drugs for hair loss. It blocks DHT production by inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase from reacting with free testosterone. By taking Propecia circulating levels of DHT can be decreased by 65% to 98%. This 1998 study concluded that 1mg pill taken daily could slow hair loss and increase hair regrowth. Once treatment stops, hair loss will resume.

You can apply the above ingredients to the scalp using topical solutions or oils such as pumpkin seed oil (see below). Less research has been conducted on topical use of extracts like saw palmetto, but there’s is a reasonable amount of investment in topical DHT blockers.

DHT Blocker Shampoo

Best anti DHT shampoos

As well as using a topical leave in scalp treatment, there are many shampoos that claim to block DHT. I’ve listed what I consider to be the best DHT blocker shampoos here.

It worth noting that ketoconazole is thought to be a good topical DHT blocker. Currently the most popular shampoo with the highest concentration of ketoconazole is a shampoo called Nizoral (pictured). Nizoral contains 2% ketoconazol. Ketoconazole is a highly toxic ingredient so you should only use Nizoral two or three times a week tops. There are several shampoos with lower concentrations of ketoconazole, which I’ve listed on my ketoconazxole shampoo page.

My recommendation is to use a 2% ketoconazole shampoo twice a week and use a high quality hair loss shampoo for the rest of the week.

Green Tea

A readily available, natural DHT blocker is green tea. Aside from other benefits, green tea contains epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG), a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. A study by the Harvard Medical School published in the Journal of Nutrition proved green tea reduces DHT levels.

Pumpkin seed oil has also been proven to inhibit the production of 5-alpha-reductase. Pumpkin seeds contain not one but two DHT blockers. The first is beta-sitosterol, a phytosterol, which is structurally like cholesterol. The other is a steroid, delta-7-sterine. A 2014 Chinese study evaluated the effect of a daily dose of 400mg of pumpkin seed oil on 38 men with AGA. A randomized equal number of men received a placebo. After 24 weeks, scientists discovered a 40% mean increase in hair count in the group receiving the pumpkin seed oil as compared to the placebo group.

It should be noted that a small percentage of men taking DHT blockers suffer from adverse side effects. These can include loss of sexual libido, depression and gynecomastia, the development of male breasts.

DHT blockers work, and there is ample scientific evidence to prove it. By inhibiting the destructive effects of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, hair loss can be slowed.

My Method for Removing DHT from the Scalp

DHT is the most significant cause of hair loss. What you’re about to read explains how to

  • safely remove DHT from your scalp;
  • unblock pores in your scalp;
  • and trigger your body to increase cell production, blood circulation and nutrient allocation in your scalp.

Sebum is the oil that secretes from your skins pores and helps condition your hair. However, it contains DHT.

There’s also a whole load of DHT just under your skin and flowing in your blood.

That’s the reason your hair is thinning.

It’s as simple as this: if you want to stop your hair loss you need to remove DHT from your scalp and block DHT in your body.

And if your scalp is shiny, your scalp is literally covered in a thick layer of hair killing sebum based plaque. If you do nothing else to help your hair do what you’re about to learn about.

Strip DHT Away From Your Scalp

The technique I’ve developed strips away the DHT containing sebum based plaque, leaving your scalp skin renewed, fresh and free to start growing hair again.

This technique unblocks the pores in the scalp, allowing hairs to grow freely.

And in my opinion, it’s vital that you do this if you want to regrow your hair.

You can use all the hair loss treatments in the world. But if you don’t do this, their effect will be minimal. You must perform this simple at home procedure if you want to stop your hair loss and regrow your hair.

Not only does this technique strip away DHT from the scalp and unblock the pores, it also triggers your body to significantly increase blood flow to your hair follicles, which increases the amount of nutrients being sent to your hair.

The result is that your scalp starts to regrow new hair that was once being restricted by DHT.

This technique can be performed at home, on your own in around twenty minutes. If you have a very shiny scalp it will take a little longer — for some people it can take up to an hour to perform the technique. It’s well worth it though.
