Hair growth stimulating shampoos

To stimulate more hair growth, look for ingredients that boost scalp blood circulation and nourish the hair follicles. Ingredients like caffeine, cayenne, gingseng and vitamins like biotin are designed to do this.

What’s the best hair loss shampoo for men?

Nizoral Ketoconazole Shampoo

Most men’s hair loss is caused by testosterone interacting with 5-alpha reductase, which produces DHT. We know that reducing DHT reduces hair loss, so as a man the best thing you can do is get a shampoo that reduces DHT.

Increased scalp DHT seems to result increased scalp inflammation, which may be one of the reasons DHT causes hair loss. So you also want a shampoo that contains ingredients that reduce inflammation, such as peppermint and ketoconazole.

Lipogaine hair loss shampoo

If you’re a man I’d recommend using Nizoral shampoo twice a week because it contains a high concentration of ketoconazole (2%) and something like Lipogaine, Revita or Wick & Strom Apex Crown the other days of the week because they contain a lower concentration of ketoconazole plus loads of other really ingredients.

What are the key ingredients to look for in a good shampoo for hair loss?

DS Labs Revita hair loss shampoo

The most effective ingredient against hair loss is ketoconazole. Ketoconazole is an anti-fungal agent commonly used in medicated anti-dandruff shampoo. However, it’s also thought to have DHT blocking properties and is widely used and recommended by hundreds if not thousands of members of the biggest hair loss forums.

The most commonly used ketoconazole shampoo is Nizoral, which should only be used 2 or 3 times a week because it contains 2% ketoconazole. Ketoconazole is actually highly toxic, which is why it kills the bacteria that causes the funghi that causes dandruff. However, it’s not recommended to use it too frequently.

In my opinion a really good compromise is to use DS Laboratories Revita or the RegenePure shampoo, both of which contain lower concentrations of ketoconazole, so can be used daily and also contain several other beneficial ingredients. All of these shampoos are featured at the top of this page, from where you can compare ingredients, prices and weights.

Revita hair loss shampoo

It sounds like a gimmick but actually, studies have shown that topically applied caffeine may help reduce hair loss and even increase hair growth. Even a shampoo like Alpecin may be beneficial. However there’s a shampoo that contains a much higher dose of caffeine, which I’ve featured here on this page (the Majestic Pure Coffee Shampoo).

Of the shampoos on this page The DS Labs Revita shampoo also contains caffeine. In fact Revita contains all the key ingredients for stimulating hair growth, which is why I feature it at the top of my list. However, it is also one of the most expensive shampoos on this list.

The RegenePure, FolliOne and Wick & Strom shampoos also contain caffeine. You can view their full ingredients lists by scrolling up the page.

DHT Blocking ingredients

DHT is the most significant cause of hair loss. It’s the main cause of male pattern baldness, which is the most common form of hair loss. DHT is a by-product of the hormone testosterone (which is why men experience hair loss far more than women). When DHT reaches the hair follicles is causes them to gradually miniaturize, until they become dormant.

There are several natural ingredients that are known to block the conversion of testosterone into DHT and this blocking is the basis of many hair loss treatments. Several ingredients are used in these shampoois to block DHT. If you’re suffering male pattern baldness, look for a shampoo that contains ingredients like:

I also recommend taking a look at my lists of the best topical DHT blockers and the best natural DHT blocker supplements.

What else should you look for in a hair loss shampoo?

If you want to fight hair loss and help your hair grow you want a shampoo that contains ingredients that improve circulation in the scalp, such as niacin. You also need a shampoo that cleanses your scalp well, otherwise pores may become blocked, leading to hair loss — ingredients like salicylic acid help with this. Finally, you should look for ingredients that reduce DHT in your scalp because DHT causes hair loss. These are the primary three concerns. After that you can start to look for shampoos containing nutrients that help feed your hair or energize cells in the scalp.

What to avoid in a shampoo

You need a shampoo that cleanses your scalp well, but you should avoid shampoos with harsh chemicals like “sodium lauryl sulfate” — this is like a bleach, which after years of use may cause hair follicle miniaturization and may also be toxic if absorbed through your skin (though in small doses is safe). See organic shampoos that don’t contain sodium lauryl sulfate for more information.

My review of hair loss shampoos — what is the best shampoo for hair loss prevention and hair growth promotion?

I’ve listed above some of the best hair loss shampoos available. Where I’ve listed the benefits and drawbacks for each shampoo I have listed ALL the benefits and ALL the drawbacks (as far as I can see). So if there’s only one benefit, there’s only one benefit — likewise with the drawbacks. If you want me to look at any other shampoos, let me know in the comments.

DS Laboratories Revita High Performance Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo

In my opinion the best shampoos out there are DS Laboratories Revita Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo, RegenePure and Wick & Strom. DS Labs Revita shampoo ticks almost all the boxes. However, it’s very expensive. If $25 is a bit excessive (which it probably is for most people), you might be better off going for a natural or even organic shampoo that is isn’t specifically labelled as a hair loss shampoo. The problem with a lot of hair loss shampoos is they contain ingredients that may help promote hair growth, but to save money they’ve used cheap base ingredients like sodium lauryl sulphate.

So if you’re not prepared to pay for the DS Labs Revita shampoo or any of my other top 5, it’s probably worth taking a look at my list of organic shampoos, which are cheaper and also contain many beneficial ingredients.

It’s also worth checking out my list of ketoconazole shampoos, which contain a higher concentration of ketoconazole and my list of anti-DHT shampoos, which are specifically forumalted to block DHT.

  1. That sounds like a pretty exhaustive list of hair loss shampoos. I would add that you can always find the full ingredients list if you know where to look, though it might not do many people much good. The companies must disclose the full ingredients list to whatever board or committee is responsible for supervising the safety of things that humans use. You can usually get a full ingredients list by checking that organization’s website or writing to them and requesting it. In the case of those shampoos that claim to help with hair loss, they often have to pass drug levels of studies and supervision in order to prove both efficacy and safety before they can be put on the market. Still, thanks for the detailed review!

  2. hi, what about dove shampoo and himalaya. my skin is allergic to all alopathic medicines and also mediated shampoos. what shall i use. recently i went for low level laser light therapy and i started losing my hair. what will i do now. actually i had thin hair but i never used 2hav hairfall problem. now im taking homeopathy medicine and today is the 9th day of taking the medicine and i didnt see a single 1% improvement. please suggest me something.

    1. Hi Sara,
Homeopathic medicine is highly unlikey to help you grow hair, unless it has a placebo effect on your mind, which helps reduce your stress levels, causing a psychosomatic effect on your hair — however this is unlikely to cause any noticeable results. Scientific research has shown that homeopathic medicine contains negligable amounts of the ingredients needed to improve health.
Dove shampoo won’t do anything positive for your hair — it certainly won’t help you regrow hair. Nor will Himalaya shampoo.
But the shampoo you use isn’t the most important factor in the fight against hair loss. There are far more important factors, such as eating the right foods for hair growth, getting your scalp in the right condition for hair growth, normalising your hormonal balance to prevent hair loss and reducing your stress levels.
I would concentrate on getting these areas right. As for shampoo, try to choose a natural shampoo that doesn’t contain SLS (the linked page provides good guidance on the kind of thing you should be looking for).

  3. im doing everything to stop my hairfall. can u please tell whether low level laser light therapy for hair growth can be the cause of hairfall?

  4. Hi Sara,
Low level laser therapy is actually one of the better treatments for hair loss. It stimulates circulation in the scalp, which can help encourage hair growth. I haven’t studied laser therapy so I can’t give you much advice on the subject.
All the products I have seen recommend using the treatment for a maximum of three times per week. So if you are using more frequently that that, it may have detrimental effects on your hair.
Can you explain in more detail why you think the laser therapy is causing increased hair loss for you? I may be able to help you further if you provide some more details.

    1. Hi Mohammed,
It’s not the worst shampoo but it’s not a great shampoo. Have a look at the ingredients in Rivivogen Bio Cleansing Shampoo:
Aqua, Decyl Glucoside, Disodium Ciciamphodiacetate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Aloe Barbadensis Gel (Aloe Vera), Simmondsia Chinensis Oil (Jojoba Oil), Cocoyl Sarcosine, Glycol Stearate, Dimethicone, Polyquaternium-4, Cyamopsis Tetragonolobus Gum, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Zinc Sulfate, Linoleic Acid, Azelaic Acid, Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate (Vitamin B6), Niacin, Serenoa Serrulata Extract (Saw Palmetto), Menthol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone
Now compare that to the shampoos listed on this page:
As you can see the shampoos I list in my article have fewer ingredients and the ingredients they have are natural fruits, herbs and oils, which contain nutrients that may feed the hair. Try to find a shampoo that contains natural, nutritious ingredients.

  5. Thanks for your reply the problem with me is I have thinning hair and if dont do anything about it will loose it all. There are so many shampoos out there one gets so confused as to what is the best one.
What do you make of Avalon Organics Shampoo, Thickening, Biotin B-Complex and regene pure?

  6. Ya surely, as i told u earlier also, i didnt have thick hair,so i in order2make it thicker i went2a dermatolist. I never had this hairfall problem in my life of 21yrs. The doctor askd me 2go for hair laser treatment once a week 30times and gave me a medicated shampoo x-gain shampoo. For the 1st 3sittings everythng was fine but i was using my old shampoo, but 4m 4th week i switchd 2x-gain shampoo& startd havin severe hairfal. I thot tat d shampoo didn suit me,doctor gave me some other herbal shampoo,bt was of no use. Its been2months nw,i did homeopathy 4a month bt it was of no use. 2days back i wen2 2dermatologists, both prescribed me folihair tab and tab zocon 50mg. Scalpe shampoo 2wice a week and candid b lotion and mintop2%. The problem is my skin iz prone2allergy in al medicated thngs so far i hav tried. This is the whole story. And im stil confusd whether it was the laser treatment or x-gain shampoo the cause of my excessiv hairfall. Bt i dnt thnk a shampoo cn b so harmful,n nw im realy getting scared2apply another medicated shampoo. Should i shave my scalpe?

    1. Hi Sara,
It’s not necessarily the shampoo or the laser therapy that have caused an increase in your hair loss. In fact it’s
unlikely to be either. Sometimes what seems to be a sudden increase in hair loss can be caused by some change that occured months ago, because of the way your hair grows and sheds in cycles that take months and even years to complete.
In this case it does sound as if you may have reacted badly to something in the shampoo. However this is unlikely since the shampoo is designed to help your hair grow, therefore it should be safe. If you could post the shampoo’s ingredients I could take a look for you.
The laser therapy is highly unlikely to have caused the excess hair shedding, so I would not worry about that.
Have you had an increase in stress levels recently? That might account for increased shedding.

  7. The shampoo contains sodium lauryl ether sulphate, cocodimonium hydroxypropyl hydrolyzed wheat protein, meadowfoamamidopropyl betaine, almond oil PEG-8 esters, dimethicone PEG-8 meadowfoamate, acrylates copolymer, cocoamidopropyl betaine, PEG-12 dimethicone, dimethiconol(and) TEA-Docecylbenzenesulfonate, PEG-2 dimeadow foamamidoethylmonium methosulphate, polysorbate20, ethylene glycol monostearate, ppG-2 hydroxyethyl coco isostearamide, diazolidinyl urea and lodopropynyl butylcarbamate, dexpanthenol, alpha-tocopheryl acetate(vitaminE as acetate),disodium edetate, guar hydroxypropyl-trimonium chloride, hydrolyzed soyprotein, jojoba oil, wheat germ oil, phenoxyethanal, 2methyl-4isothiazolin -3one, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, fragnance, purified water. Before this i usd2use normal sls shampoo. I applied dis shampoo only 2tymes. A shampoo cant cause so much harm. Should i shave my scalp?wil tat b helpful?

    1. These ingredients aren’t likely to cause sudden rapid hair loss. They won’t stop hair loss either though! You’d be better off choosing an organic SLS free shampoo that is gentle on your skin.
You don’t need to shave your head — this isn’t going to help you regrow hair so don’t do that. If you could answer a few more questions I may be able to help you further.
Do you suffer from high stress levels or anxiety?
Is your scalp itchy, red or flaky?
Have you had your iron levels checked by your doctor?
If you’d like to email me your reponses using the contact form we can chat further.

  8. but sir, what is your email adress? and after losing hair very badly then i started taking tension. i went for few tests like hb%, TSH, FERRITIN and few hormonal tests. the reports will come on monday. and i do have dandruff now for which im using scalpe shampoo, initially wen i was losing my hair i didn have any problem neither on my scalpe nor any emotional tension. and life is full of ups and downs, so ofcourse i used 2take tensions when i used fall in trouble but i never had any hairfall problem. there were times wen i thought of committing suicide but then also i never had hairfall. im consuming folihair tablets, and tab zocon. three doses are over. ill have to wait for 10more days for results. but till now therez no single percent result. my mom is forcing to get bald, she gave me 10days time. and the doctors are just saying that everything will be alright and wenever i call them up they shout at me. i dont want to get bald at this age, my boyfriend loves me alot and he will not leave me, but will i be able to walk with him. all his friends will make fun of me and him also. these things day by day are creating a kind of hatred towards god. who ever you are sir, u are a v nice person. i went to four topmost dermatologists in my city, they all are so mean, except one lady doctor. atleast she speaks to me nicely. and one more thing, few days back i went to kaya skin clinic- it has got its centres all over india. they checked my scalp and told me that they will directly infuse vitamins and minerals in my hair roots or follicles. do you have any idea regarding such treatment?

  9. Hi I have recently experienced a lot of hair fall that I had never before. I don’t use any product neither shampoo nor hair gel rather I use mustard oil only. I don’t have dandruff problem too. But I changed soap from lux to liril to lifebuoy and I use to bath everyday using it. And I don’t have stress at all. Does excessive use of soap causes hairfall? Please suggest me what I can do for my problem.. Thank you!

    1. Hi Khemraj,
The use of soap is unlikely to be causing the hair loss. By far the most likely cause of hair loss is DHT.
However the regular use of pure mustard oil on your scalp might not be a great idea, as it may be clogging the pores in your scalp (I can’t be certain of this as I’m not familiar with the nature of the oil and how it interacts with the skins oil (sebum)).
Also, make sure you’re rinsing the soap from your scalp thoroughly so that you don’t get a build up of soap residue on your scalp, which may clog pores.
The most important things to do are to keep the pores clear, remove DHT from the scalp and keep DHT levels in the scalp as low as possible. Then you need to feed the hair and increase blood circulation as much as possible to promote hair regrowth. In my method I show you how to alternate between mildly damaging the scalp and feeding it (while also increasing blood circulation). This alternation provokes a rapid healing and concentration of cell growth in the scalp, which is how my method works.
      I hope that helps,

  10. sir recently i went through a diagnosis online belgrave hairloss centre in uk. the trichologist told me that im suffering from female pattern baldness and she suggested minodoxil which ill never ever take coz it has severe side effects. is their any natural way to control DHT and im not sure whether i have it or not coz everything was done online. she didnt see my scalp. what about segal solution from canada as i have heard alot bout it. is there any test through which ill be confirmed that i have high DHT levels?

    1. Hi Sara,
Minoxidil is not strictly a treatment for DHT — it’s actually designed to increase blood circulation in the scalp. It’s often prescribed as the ‘default’ treatment for hair loss when the real cause of the hair loss is unknown. It doesn’t actually treat any cause of hair loss, it simply helps promote blood flow in the scalp, which in some cases may help slow or stop hair loss and even promote hair growth. However I believe Belgravia use a minoxidil product that also contains ‘Azelaic acid’, which is thought to fight DHT in the scalp — so they may be prescribing this to you, but I can’t say for sure.
You shouldn’t be concerned about the side effects of Minoxidil (as a topical treatment), as these are not known to be severe. For a list of side effects see here: http://www.medicinenet.com/minoxidil-topical/page2.htm.
The Segals product looks interesting — if DHT is the main cause of your hair loss I would say the Segals product would be more effective than Minoxidil, as it’s ingredients are primarily designed to combat DHT. It actually looks like a good product.
The only problem with treatments like these is I don’t think they are powerful enough to completely stop most cases of advanced hair loss. In my experience you need a really powerful solution, such as the method outlined in my eBook.
My recommendation to you is to either try the Segals product or download my eBook and follow the instructions. You can download the eBook from here:

  11. Sir, actually im not sure whether its becoz of DHT, if i do my testosterone level test, then will i be confirmed whether its due DHT or something else?

  12. Hi Chris,
If I have heredity (inherited from my grand fathers) hair loss, will any shampoo or treatment help my hair to grow back or stop thinning?

    1. Hi Gregg,
I personally don’t recommend Propecia. However, it does work in (from memory) 66% of men. However the downsides are that you have to take it for the rest of your life and it can have sexual side effects.
Propecia inhibits DHT production. DHT is the most significant cause of male hair loss, so if the drug is effective it will stop the hair loss. However, if using Propecia I would still recommend taking some action to increase hair growth, as Propecia only treats a cause of hair loss and does nothing to increase hair growth. That said, by eliminating the primary cause of hair loss the hair may regrow to some extent naturally.
However there are better ways, in my opinion, of inhibitting DHT, which I explain in my eBook. Look out for the release of edition 2 of my eBook, coming later this year (free to buyers of edition 1), which goes into even more detail on how to reduce DHT production in the body.

    1. Hi Shabz,
I’ve had a look at the Nanogen supplement and the ingredients look good. Give it a try and see if you get any noticeable results. You’ll need to give it 3 months to see whether you get any results or not.
I have to say, in my experience, hair loss supplements don’t tend to achieve great results. The problem is they don’t solve the problem of scalp DHT and without dealing with scalp DHT you’re unlikely to stop hair loss.

  13. i heard few negetiv reviews regarding segal solutions. are they really safe? coz my hair is alredy damaged due to that laser therapy.

  14. my FSH is 2.16mIU/ml and hb% is 11.2. is it normal. and does the testosterone test detect whether i have developed DHT or not?

    1. Hi Sara,
2.16 is low for a pre-menopausal adult woman. However I do not know your age so I can’t tell you whether this level is abnormal. What was your doctor’s analysis of the result? They should have had some comment.
      All the best,

  15. im 27 years old…..im loosing lot of hair now a days…..im using garnier antidandruff shampoo…..but it doesnt work…
im experiencing hairfall since i started dieting…..here is my diet
    moring 20 alnonds,1glass milk,2egg whites
lunch 2rotis with any curry, snacks some nuts and fruits
dinner steamed veggies and tofu or chicken with one orange…
    this is my diet…..
can usuggest me best diet and best shampoo formy har…to reduce hair fall

    1. Hi ani,
It’s pretty difficult to tell whether your diet has anything to do with your hair loss. I’d recommend reducing your intake of almonds — perhaps varing almonds with other nuts. The rest of your diet looks fairly good. The important thing is to eat plenty of green leafy vegetables, lean protein and oliy fish if possible.
The more likely cause of your hair loss is DHT.

  16. Hi
In our country we have some shampoos like dove(damage therapy)or sunsilk or pantene and…
What do think about these shampooes?
Do you think that these are good and effective for hair falling?
And also I have to tell you that all of them are conditioners.

    1. Hi Mohammad,
In my opinion Pantenne, Dove and Sunsilk are some of the worst shampoos available on the market. Almost all the shampoos sold in supermarkets and high street shops are poor quality compared with the ones listed in this article and these articles:
Avoid shampoos that contain conditioner. If you use conditioner don’t massage it into your scalp, just your hair. Conditioners merely coat the hair with chemicals to make it appear shinier — they do nothing to improve the health of the hair.
Choose a shampoo that contains natural ingredients rich in nutrients. Massage it into your scalp to wash your scalp as well as your hair. Avoid brands like Pantenne, Sunsilk and Dove if you can afford to.

  17. Hi Chris,
I wanted to know if you tried Bioxine …and what about Natur Vital shampoo, I know you recommended it in this articule but I want to make sure to use the right one. I suffer a lot of stress I used to have a lot of thick hair then started to fall a lot, got thinner, my roots hurts and about year ago I been having a lot of dandruff. Since I live in Chile I don´t have access to most of the products that you recommend , that´s why I´m choosing between those mentioned.

    1. Hi Karina,
I’m not familiar with Bioxine. The Natur Vital shampoos are OK. What you need to stop the dandruff is a shampoo containing zinc.
You might also benefit from massaging coconut oil into your scalp every night for a few weeks. This can restore balance in the scalp, eliminating dandruff.
If you feel that stress is the cause of your hair loss I’d recommend using the audio mind training programme that comes free with my eBook. This 8 part programme trains your mind using subliminal messaging and ‘binaural beats’ to make you react more calmly in stressful situations.
      Hope this helps,

  18. I have also this Problem..i m 18 yrs old n live in Bangladesh.. what cAN i do Now ?? What do u think ABOUt Sumuns AroMA hairloss products ?? Or have u any suggest 4 me stopping my hairloss Problem ??

  19. i am 22 years and my FSH is 2.16mIU/ml. and testosterone is .72 . is it normal? as i was losing excessive hairs, so i shaved my head and now its exactly 1.5months today. i apply candid B lotion on my scalp everyday, (its now 2weeks) and 1 tab follihair daily. i wont say that my problem has completely vanished, but yes where i used to lose 100strands of hair daily, now i lose 15-20strands i guess becoz its not possible to detect the lost ones with very short hairs, but when i apply oil, then i do get 10-12 strands every time. and one very imp i wana ask. u told me that low level laser therapy cannot be the cause, but i think it is the cause. becoz jus after doing it i had been losing my hair. i jus want to know is it possible that the same device can be used as both hair growth and hair removal switched at diffrent points. pls sir, answer my questions

    1. Hi Sara,
Can you tell me which laser you have used?
I’ve never used Follihair so can’t vouich for it’s effectiveness but looking at it’s ingredients it looks like it could be of some small help.
Your FSH seems quite low but your doctor should be able to advise you better on this as I do not have details on your medical history. Did your doctor talk to you about your FSH and testosterone levels? He/she will be able to help you with these particulars better than I can. I recommend asking their opinion on your hormonal levels and your hair loss.

  20. Bioxcin is an anti hair loss shampoo produced by a Turkish company, biota.Millions of bioxcin has been sold in Turkey but still there are too many bald men unfortunately 🙂
ingredient is not known by someone else : hidden 🙂
They say : bioxcin consist of BIOCOMPLEX B11 but really noone knows what it is !!!
Bioxcin is an advertisement champion , thats all. it is not a quality shampoo , believe me . it did not use to have SLS inside but now all bioxcin , bioxcin forte , bioxcin genesis consist of SLS.
Revita and revivogen is obviously my favorite shampoo .
    good night.

  21. My natural hair color is black and I have lot Gray hairs, To cover these gray hairs i use hair color’s like Loreal and which ever is available with the saloon guys. Does that increase the levels of DHT ?. Since few days i have started losing hair like crazy.

    1. Hi Kumar,
No hair dye does not increase DHT levels. However if you’re having bleach applied to your hair this will damage your hair. Bleach breaks down protein, which can make individual hairs thinner in diameter. Dying hair does not cause your hair to stop growing though.

  22. I am currently using Klorane Quinine B6 Shampoo.
Does the benefits of this product outweigh the negatives?
And how often should I wash my hair with this stuff?

    1. Hi Daniel,
Having looked at the ingredients of the Klorane Quinine B6 Shampoo I don’t think it’s particularly going tro help with hair loss. It’s better than the average supermarket shampoo though.
How often you shampoo depends on what cosmetic styling products you’re using on your hair and how greasy your scalp gets each day. If you’re using gel daily I would recommend washing it out of your hair every night before sleeping to prevent it from absorbing into your scalp overnight. Likewise, if you find you get a fairly greasy scalp during the day it’s worth washing the sebum off your scalp, as sebum contains DHT, which causes hair loss.

  23. i didnt didnt use anything by myself, i used to got to a clinic once a week for that treatment. that devie looked like a hair drier type and jus as we keep the receiver on the phone(telephone), it was like that.(i donno know how to xplain). there was something written on it like – high, medium and low. before this treatment i hardly used to lose even 2strands of hair daily. it was my stupidity that i wanted my hair to be more thicker and wanted to maintain it for my future and i think that doctor asked me to go for the treatment just for money without checking whether my scalp needs it or not. he told me that my hair will becum thicker in diameter, and jus the reverse happened 3weeks after the treatment i started losing my hair like anything. but still he insisted me to carry on, its not a problem and now i ended up with shaving my head. its been 4months now that i stopped the treatment, but it hasnt helped me anyway. i have less hairfall jus becoz my hair is only 1month 21days. no new hairgrowth and i find many small hairs, but they are the dormant hair which will fallout. god knows what they did on my scalp, but i had to pay a highprice for that, my career is gone(i was a model). and the worst part is i read it in “americanhairloss.org/laser hairloss therapy-does it work?” that if more energy is given than required then the ray will destroy the hair and cause it to fallout. but im not clear with it, did they mean that tat it will destroy the hairfollicle or the hair? is there any test that will determine whether my hairfollicles are dead or not?

  24. 1more thing i forgot to add, i showed my reports to a local doctor he told me everything is normal. so im 100% sure that im suffering from traction alopecia

  25. Hi! can DS Laboratories Revita Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo be used for both men and women? How long will it take in order to see the result?
    Thanks in advance!

  26. Hi Monich,
Yes Revita hair loss shampoo can be used by both men and women. The ingredients are not particularly tailored to either and don’t contain any potent DHT inhibiting ingredients.
There aren’t any shampoos that contain DHT inhibitors in high enough concentration to make them too strong for women — strong DHT inhibitors only come in oral form and would not be effective enough to prevent hair loss via topical delivery using a shampoo.
So there aren’t any hair loss shampoos that are too strong for women.

  27. Hello Chris. I’ve been using Head&Shoulders 2 in 1 shampoo plus conditioner in one bottle for the longest time now. I’m 21 and have recently noticed that some of my hair is thinning at the front. A little background: I always used to wash my hair every other day until I started working at a fast food place since June and due to the environment I have needed to shower every morning. I also use American Crew fiber every day to style my hair and also have to wear a hat for my job for about 5-6 hours every day. I go to bed with the product still on my hair too. What do you recommend I do/use? I want to try American Crew tea tree shampoo and conditioner but I read that one or both contain sodium laureth sulfate, so I don’t know if that’s a good choice. Genetic-wise, both my grandfathers on both sides of my family are still with full heads of hair, and my dad only started balding until recently too (he’s 49). At my age, he had long thick hair. I’ve always had really thick hair too. I’d really appreciate your advice on this, as this is starting to take a negative toll on me.

    1. Hi Jordan,
From memory I think American Crew do some reasonably good hair care products although none of their products have made it into my lists. If you’re interested in a high quality, nutrient rich hair gel or wax, check out this list:
My advice to you is if you have started noticing your hair is thinning, take major action now. You need to do everything you can possibly do to prevent hair loss as it is a very difficult problem to solve. I’d recommend downloading my eBook and following the instructions. It gives you a detailed step-by-step plan on how to intensely nourish and feed your hair, while also eliminating the causes of hair loss.
If you’re using gel, either use an organic highly nourishing gel/wax or wash it out before bed. It’s not so much of a problem to leave a natural nutrient rich product in your hair overnight.
      All the best,

  28. sir actually from many days i used to face hair fall problem ……it really puts me in tention.. 4 getting relief from dis problem i used many shampoos like dove, panteene but they doesnt show any improvement and now my hair got too mch thin and m really worried about it..and nw i used to prefer nizoral shampoo is it gud 4 hair fall????????nd tel me d best shampoo 4 reducing hair fall??????plz answer……

  30. hii…
m facing heavy hair fall…i live in delhi nd 22 yrs old..
i used to have very long, healthy nd thick hair…which is hereditary in d fammily..now frm past two-three years…i had to shorten my hair due to heavy hairfall…i have very thin nd brittle hair..they break easily..no shine…
i oil my hair twice a week with almond oil..
    i use amway stinique..plzz tell some remedy..nd if d shampoo z ok?

    1. Brittle hair is often a sign that your body lacks the nutrients required to feed the hair and/or something (such as the hormone DHT) is preventing nutrients from feeding your hair.
I advise following an intense nutrient program to feed your hair, while also removing and blocking DHT from the follicles, increasing blood flow to the hair and stimulating cell production in the scalp.
I provide detailed instructions on the above in my eBook, which you can download from here:

  31. Thanks for this. Really helpful. What do you think about Alpecin? And have you come across 101 Hair shampoo from the chinese herbal medicine shop?

    1. Hi Ray,
The feedback I’ve had on Alpecin hasn’t been great. Caffeine doesn’t do a great deal for your hair. I haven’t looked into the Fabao shampoos in any detail. I’ll check them out and get them up on this page as I think they’re worth a mention.
Check back in a couple of weeks and I should have some points up on their best shampoo.
      All the best,

  32. i want long and strong hair..now a days my hairs r falln..which shampoo is the best shampoo for hair

  33. Hello Chris,
I started noticing my hair thinning about 6 months ago, so of course i instantly started researching causes, treatments and so forth. At the moment i’m taking HairOMega 3-1 and using an “organic” shampoo (Avalon Organics Shampoo, Thickening, Biotin B-Complex). I was just curious what your opinion one the two is? I greatly appreciate any help/advice.
    Thank you for your time.

    1. Hi Dayne,
Thanks for your comment. OK the supplement contains really good ingredients. These are some of the key ingredients you need to stop hair loss and promote hair growth. However, if you read my book you’ll see that hair loss supplements don’t really work for one good reason – check out my article : “Food for Hair Growth” for a very brief explanation.
In summary, if you want to feed your hair through diet, it’s better to use whole foods because your body is better able to assimilate the nutrients (for one reason).
The Avalon shampoo is top notch — one of the best. I really need to add it to this post and have been meaning to for a while. You’ve reminded me I need to do that 🙂
Do check out the Food for Hair Growth post if you’re interested in feeding your hair through diet. The best thing you can do for quick results though is use my 2 minute a day hair growth technique.
      All the best,

  34. Hi, my hair is thinning pretty badly and I’m 23.
I have been using Head & Shoulders 2in1 shampoo for the past year. What do you think of this shampoo??
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Dante,
Head and Shoulders is unlikely to promote hair growth. However the zinc contained in it can help prevent dandruff. If you’re looking to try to stop your hair loss and regrow hair I would recommend starting a solid hair growth regime.

  35. ihad very long and tick hair before two years after tat my full hair gone due to fever now i m having very thin and short hair. i feel ve ry shy to go out. i am taking treatment for my hair grow thicker and i am taking proanagen tablets, vipromin protein powder and reglobin tonic. will it helps to promote hair growth shal i continue or what i need to do..

  36. Hi,
I wanted to purchase the DS Laboratories Revita Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo but I was not sure if I should purchase the conditoner as well. Do you think this shampoo is recommended to use with Rogaine and sould I purchase the shampoo and conditioner or the shampoo only?

    1. Hi gouri,
I’m writing a guide on “How to make hair grow faster and longer” at the moment, which I will be publishing to the website in a few weeks time. Follow me on Twitter to get the announcement of the release. This guide will tell you everything you need to know.
      All the best,

  38. Hi we are in South Africa, your hair products that you have mentioned is there any shampoo brand that you know in S.A
I was using “VIGRO”,recently we have changed to “CLEAR ANTIFALL WITH NOTRIUM 10” and we are using these tabs called “ALA SILICA”
Can you advise on the above
    Thank You

    1. Hi George,
I’m afraid I’m not familiar with those products. Do you have links so I can take a look?
      Many thanks,

  39. Hi,
How about RegenePure nourishing treatment shampoo? Am having itachy scalp.
    Thanks in advance

    1. Hi Anitha,
The RegenePure shampoo look like a good anti hair loss shampoo. I’ll add it to the list. Thanks for the recommendation.

  40. sir i m from bangladesh..i face d problem of hair falling.i m using apoliva shampoo garnier fructis conditioner but no result i get..plz sujjest me thinking availablity in bangladeshi manner..is “herbal essences break’s over” good 4me.my hair is not dry not oily.age 21

    1. Hi isfakul,
The shampoo you use is not going to have a big impact on hair growth in most cases. Take a look at this page to see what you have to do to make your hair grow.

  41. Hi,
Please tell me about Neutrogena t/scalp therapeutic anti-itch liquid for itchy scalp as it is available in Singapore shops rest of the above your listed shampoos I don’t find in Singapore.

    1. Hi Anitha,
The benefit of a shampoo like Neutrogena T/Sal is it contains 3% salicylic acid, which will clear the pores in the scalp and remove sebum build up. The idea behind this is really good. If you have a very oily scalp or a flaky scalp this is a good shampoo to go for. It might also benefit hair growth by clearing build up and fighting fungal infection.

  42. Hi,
Will you recommend Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo or Garnier Fructis Dry Scalp Anti-Dandruff Shampoo for dandruff. Is there any shampoos which can get rid of dandruff permanently.Am having dry, itchy curly hair with thin flakes coming out if I don’t wash daily. What shampoo you will recommend for me.
I used to loss many hairs if I use olive oil or hair tonic on my hair for dryness. So am afraid to massage my hair with hair tonic/any oils.

    1. Hi Anitha,
The Paul Mitchell Tea Trea Special Shampoo ingredients look good. This shampoo would be good if you have oily hair but might be to harsh if you have very dry hair. Alternatively it could be used less frequently.
If you have a flaky scalp I’d recommend a shampoo that contains ketoconazole, which kills the fungus that causes dandruff.

  43. sir…iam having severe hair loss…iam 26…and my father is bald….i went to doctor and he prescribed….Xgain shampoo ….ZPTO

  45. How about sunsilk (hair fall solution) shampoo? if its bad can u recommend a shampoo i can get from somewhere in my place..

    1. Hi Samiha,
I had a look at the ingredients of the Sunsilk Hair Fall Solution Shampoo and to be honest I don’t see how they can label that shampoo as “hair fall solution” shampoo. It really will do nothing to reduce hair loss and promote hair growth.

  46. Hi,
I’m Santosh. I have been suffering from harifall from last 12 months, previously my hair is so healthy and shining too. Now my hair gets weak and falls more oftentimes. I changed my shampoo to X Gain as advised by doctor and using it from last 6 months but i didn’t see any change. Can you give more insight about X gain shampoo? Does it helps in hair growth? Is hairfall and hairgrowth are in the same ratio?

    1. Hi Santosh,
I’m afraid I’m not familiar with X Gain shampoo. Do you have a link to a web page so I can see what it looks like?

    1. Hi Santosh,
      Thanks for getting back.
I would say X Gain is not a particularly brilliant shampoo (not quite good enough for this list), but for the price it is better than most supermarket shampoos.
      All the best,

  47. Is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate only dangerous or any Sulphate is dangerous ??? Like Ammonium Lauryl sulphate etc.

    1. Hi Vanita,
Thanks for your comment. It sounds like your hair is severely under nourished. The solution is to feed your hair with the nutrients it needs to strengthen, grow and prolong its growth phase.
Your hair needs ‘amino acids’ to grow (this is what it’s made from). Your body needs lots of supporting nutrients to aid hair growth. Stress and hormones can have a major impact on the nutrient supply to the hair.
I would recommend you begin an intense hair nourishment regime every day to feed your hair with the nutrients it needs to grow.
I’ll send over an email now with some further advice.
      All the best,

  49. in last 8 months i lost my 30percent hair ……can i get my hai back …..and how can i stop my hairfall…and which shampoo is required

  50. Hi,
Over the past year I have been looking for products that might help reduce hair loss. The only thing I really tried was a laser comb which has lowered the hair loss but not significantly. I have been looking for a shampoo that might help me and I started to hear a lot about DS Laboratories Revita Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo. However, I read in many reviews that the product’s formula changed since March 2011. I would like to know if you know something about this before buying it because it is indeed an expensive shampoo. I also read that some people experienced increase in hair loss so I am worried about that as well.
    Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi Daniel,
I have heard that the ingredients have changed and some buyers have reported that it seems to have reduced in quality.
I would check out RegenePure NT.

  51. Hi,
I am living in Asia and the weather is always hot and humid. My scalp becomes greasy very soon even after washing them. Lately I’ve noticed that my hair is thinning and quite worried over it because I am just a young working adult and hair is one of the most important asset for a lady. I can’t imagine going bald! Even the hair dresser told me that I should start taking some serious action on my hair loss because what is the point to have a pretty face but have the potential to go bald. My hair parting makes my scalp very noticeable. One thing is also I am born with very soft baby hair. I’ve tried expensive product like kerastase’s shampoo and tonic but did not see any result. Now I am using Kerasys shampoo but I am not sure if I should continue using them. Do you mind giving some advise? I also thought of trying out either Mirriam Quevedo Extreme Caviar Special Hair loss shampoo or Lakme K Therapy Active Prevention. I hope to prevent the hair loss and also promotes new hair growth from whatever I’ve lost. Hope to hear from you soon.

    1. Hi Rach,
The grease you describe is actually sebum and is secreted through the skins pores. Sebum is thought to have some impact on hair loss in some individuals.
One solution is to use a shampoo like Neutrogena T/Sal, which will help remove build-up of grease, dead skin, pollutants and cosmetics.
In my eBook I explain how to remove the underlying cause of excessive sebum, by increasing co-enzyme A in the liver, improving liver efficiency and reducing stress. I also explain how to completely remove sebum based plaque (sebum build-up and clogged pores).
      To learn more please see:

  52. Dear Sir,
Hope to be fine and doing well as i have hair loss problem and currently i am using coconut oil with Minoxidil spray once in night after in the morning i wash my hair with polytar liquid but still it is increasing hair loss. so what do you recommend for hair loss treatment.

  53. Hi, I would like to know whether l’occitane is good for long term use. if yes, which product do you recommend?

    1. Hi Jane,
Would you mind posting up the ingredients of the shampoo or a link to the product and its ingredients and I’ll take a look.

  54. Very informative site and I thank you for that.
I would very much appreciate if you can help me look into these two prodcts ‘Seaweed Scalp Clinic Mask’ and ‘Legitime Shampoo’
These are the 2 products that im currently using and its been a week. My hair fall when I bathe has not reduced at all, not sure whether hair fall is reduced throughout the day as I don’t know how to check. Its starting to make me wonder whether I wasted my money, it cost me around RM135 roughly USD40

  55. Really sorry for spamming but one last thing.
Could you recommend a shampoo and conditioner that I can get in Malaysia or probably order online? If its available in Malaysia it would be a great help thanks

    1. Hi Klan Yee,
The shampoo you use is not going to have a huge influence on your hair growth. There are other far more important factors involved. Really, the best thing you can do to increase hair growth is to increase the nutrient supply to the hair follicles. Hair receives nutrients via the blood stream, so you need to 1) increase the blood supply to the hair follicles and 2) increase your consumption of the nutrients that build hair AND the supporting nutrients that support hair growth and proper protein absorption.
      I recommend reading this:
      All the best,

  56. im currently using head and shoulders hair loss. but till now there is no changes. besides that my hair and scalp tend to become very oily the next day. n 1 of my problem is, when ever i use different shampoo , dandruff starts to appear. help me please 🙁

    1. Hi Farsilla,
If you’re experiencing dandruff it’s most likely due to a fungi called P. Oval. There are shampoos available that contain a chemical called ketoconzole. Use one of these shampoos twice a week and it should clear the dandruff up. Ketoconazole is also a mild 5-alpha reductase inhibitor so it may help reduce DHT levels in your scalp, which in turn may reduce the hair loss.
More details on ketoconazole shampoos here:
      All the best,

  57. Hi
I have had this weird allergic reaction to many shampoos non and organic where they irritate my eye Lids leaving them watery red and sore
If I could pin point the ingredients I’d be elated
If I list a few could you possibly tell me what it might be?
    Avalon organic biotin thickening (bad)
    Lavender ( extremely)
    Rosemary ( extreme)
    Unscented ( bad)
    Rice protein ( bad)
    Vanilla. ( bad)
    Cherry blossom ( bad)
    Shea butter ( extreme)
Macadamia ( good) but losing hair more
    With this why?
    Argan oil ( slight)
    Sukin moisture restoring ( bad)
    Nourishing (bad)
    Dermaveen oatmeal ( bad)
    Dr organic aloe Vera
    Nourishing therapy ( bad)
    QV gentle shampoo ( bad)
    Graham’s natural shampoo
    With Manuka honey ( bad)
I have short medium dark hair thin but enough
To cover my scalp I find the current one I use
Organix macadamia is non irritating but I noticed
Hairloss of around 20 to 40 hairs so that’s concerning
Is there an issue with organic shampoos where the
Ingredients are more irritating then the non organic
I can’t seem to find one that doesn’t irritate
Gives my hair body and fullness and softness
    Pls help
Moo goo shampoo (ok slight irritation)

    1. Hi Steven,
Organic ingredients may be more potent than the chemicals you find in other shampoos. It sounds as though you might have an allergy to one of the common ingredients found in better quality shampoos. Try to avoid the shampoos that cause the irritation. It would be worth going to your doctor and having an allergy test as these allergies may crop up at other times in your life.
The hair loss is unlikely to be down to the shampoo. It is more likely caused by DHT, stress or possibly poor scalp condition.
      All the best,

    1. Thanks Billy,
I’ll check that shampoo out and add it to the list if the ingredients look good.

  58. Hi, would u please tell me how can i stop my hair loss , and i would like to know about wen products, i bought a pomegranate cleansing and conditioner im not sure if its really help my hair, and which shampoo u recommend.
    Thank u

    1. Hi Sam,
I haven’t heard of Wen products. Can you send me a link or better yet a list of ingredients?

  59. Hi Chris
I need advice, I have had thick hair all my life. Currently 22 years old but my hair is thinning like crazy. When I put my hand through my hair I have lots of hair falling, I need to get a good shampoo. I am usuing baby shampoo. My scalp is itchy and my hair when it falls looks as if its frizzed. And my hair is thin in certain parts. I only noticed my hair is thing recently, some are very thin. How do I combat this? And I don’t shower everyday because I heard its bad but my scalp is flaky.

  60. I was searching for a SLS free and DHT inhibitor containing shampoo when I found this article. I think DS Lsboratories Revita Hairgrowth stimulatory shampoo is good to use for me. I can use oral DHT inhibitor containing liquid which I already stareted to use. Is this a good combination?

    1. Hi Chi,
Yes that would work. However be very careful when using DHT inhibitors: please make sure you tell your doctor if you’re going to begin using oral DHT inhibitors because they can reduce the size of your prostate, which may make it more difficult for your doctor to test the true health of your prostate during a prostate exam, unless he or she has full details about the DHT inhibitors you’ve been using.
      All the best,

  61. Cont… with the previous question.
I am a female, with genetic female type hair thinning; in the first stage, but with a lot of spaces.I’m even thinking about a hair replacement. (not a transplant).I want to try some shampoos before I decide to go for this expensive procedure.
Can I benefit by using DHT inhibitor?
And please let me know whether the above shampoo comes with a conditioner, and if not which conditioner is good for hair loss?

  62. hi admin
more than 4 months my hair falling out , i think lost 40% hair .i’m very tired to see everyday my hair on my shoulders, pillow ,tile floors….everywhere.i would very appreciate if you have any recommendation for get my hair back or stop my hair fall.
    thank you

  63. Hi Chris,
What do you think about ” S|6 ACTIVE Shampoo ” ?! , as they claim that it’s free of harsh chemicals.

  64. A quick query – LA Science Anti Hair Loss Shampoo does contain sodium laureth sulfate – isn’t this just as bad as sodium lauryl sulfate ?

    1. Hi Celia,
Yes that is precisely correct. If you want to avoid SLS, avoid that shampoo. Check out these SLS free organic shampoos for a good list of shampoos that don’t contain sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate.
      All the best,

      1. Thanks Chris – I was just pointing out that you have not noted this information in your recommendation for LA Science anti hair loss shampoo at the top of the page.

  65. This list is very interesting, and I’m sure they work, but one was missed from the list… Therapy-G helps remove DHT and promotes blood flow to the scalp.

    1. Thanks John,
However I don’t see how the ingredients in Therapy G can have any impact on DHT levels or scalp blood flow.
